This fascinating Liebig chromo series – Sanguinetti no. 1715 – was issued in 1934 and is titled Inedible Fish. The six cards showcase species that are unsuitable for consumption due to their toxicity, biology, or ecological role.

Interestingly, two different Dutch-language titles exist:

  • The Flemish edition reads Voor het verbruik ongeschikte vissen

  • The Dutch edition is titled Oneetbare vissen

Each card is richly illustrated with a vivid underwater scene and includes a reference to a Liebig product (e.g. Potages Liebig, Cube Liebig) in the lower section as part of the original advertising concept.

The featured species are:

  1. Clupea veneneuse – a poisonous herring type

  2. Tetraodon – the toxic pufferfish

  3. Balistes – triggerfish with rough skin and spines

  4. Boxfish – also called cowfish, with bony armor

  5. Diodon – porcupinefish with sharp spines

  6. Orthagorique – oceanic sunfish with a round body

An ideal set for collectors of marine biology, vintage educational illustration, and Liebig’s unique approach to advertising in the 1930s.
