Lithography

Lithography is a printing technique developed by Alois Senefelder at the end of the 18th century. During the 19th century, it became one of the most important methods for reproducing images and printed material, allowing detailed illustrations for both artistic and commercial purposes.

During the 19th and early 20th centuries, lithography was widely used for prints, visiting cards, trade and advertising cards, calendars, New Year cards, posters and other illustrated material. Multicolour lithographic printing is known as chromolithography.
