New Year's Card - Lithography

Date: 1858

Beautiful New Year's card from the Antwerp Zoo for the year 1858. Intended for its members.

At the top of this lithograph, you can see the Moorish coffee house, this building was demolished shortly after 1900.

In the center, we observe the interior of the Egyptian Pavilion, where the large animals resided. This includes camels, zebras, giraffes, rhinos, and elephants.

On the left and right, other animals from the zoo are depicted, such as a lion, snake, monkeys, tiger, vulture, heron, crocodile, bear, ...

Text: "Le Commissionnaire, le concierge & les Domestiques de la Société Royale de Zoologie d'Anvers, à Messieurs les membres à l'occasion de la nouvelle année Sociale 1858." 

Loosely translated: "The Commissioner, the concierge & the Servants of the Royal Society of Zoology of Antwerp, to the gentlemen members on the occasion of the new social year 1858."

* Chine-collé is an intaglio printmaking technique (etching or copper engraving), in which the image is transferred onto a surface that is adhered to a heavier support during the printing process. This is done by affixing it to your "regular" paper while you print, using paste (such as wallpaper glue). This allows for finer printing.
